The Critters
|
Just north of my campsite in Camp Doris, on the shores of Quanah Parker Lake, is an area filled with wildlife. The two species I encountered most frequently were the Bison and Prairie Dogs. The Bison were majestic. The prairie at one time had more bison than anyone could count. The Prairie Dogs were cute. I got a genuine giggle out of listening to the little critters warning each other that there was a scary human running around pointing an object at them. The warnings came long and often. I know they were talking about me because as I walked up and down the road the calls would move just ahead of the direction I was stepping. They never appeared frightened, just careful. My helmet tip to them – taking care of family. At various times of the year you can see a many animal varieties. The elk run free as do the deer. It is not unusual to have deer walk through your campsite. Of course you have to be very, very still. |
