The hardest thing in life to learn is which bridge to cross and which to burn. David Russel

The Mountains

What is it about climbing, twisting and descending mountains that attracts bikers so? If we’re not navigating paper-thin trails on dirt bikes, we’re pleasure cruising the hills, perched on the iron of our choice. Some have said it is the challenge. Others extol the wide-open vistas. Many find the change in foliage a wonder to behold. I am of the belief it is a dish garnished with many spices.
The Ouachita

We live in a state that has so much to offer. The one glaring exception is a lack of mountains. Texas riders have, at best, a few mounds that they can explore. While the Hill Country is beautiful, anyone that has ridden the Rockies cannot in good consciousness call them mountains. Luckily, we have some very fine, albeit comparatively modest, summits within a few hours north.

The Talimena Scenic Byway

At one time the trail along the tops of the Ouachita mountain range was the border that separated Arkansas from the Choctaw Nation. From one end of the drive, starting in Talihina, Oklahoma, to Mena, Arkansas (or vice-versa), spans fifty-four miles. At one point, it includes the highest elevation between the Blue Ridge and Rockies. Due to the Scenic Drive connecting these two towns, the names were combined into Talimena.

Traveling at the posted speed limit, the route can be completed in less than two hours. There are so many opportunities to pull over and explore the various overlooks, trailheads, historic sites, and park and picnic areas. It should take you much longer.

Let me add a word of caution. The road is not as challenging as parts of FM-337 (3-Sisters) but it can lull you into a false sense of security. Stay aware!

Well buckaroos, if you need a mountain fix you know where to find one. I’m stowing Amana in the barn for a much needed rest. She worked hard. Until next time ...

Don't forget;
ride often, ride hard and ride safe, but mostly ...
Ride em if ya go em!
